Is Ed Miliband a Zionist?

March 31, 2013

In an article published in the Jewish Chronicle online on 7 March 2013, it was reported that Ed Miliband had said ‘I am a Zionist’ at a dinner hosted by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

Responding to the claim made by the Jewish Chronicle, R Davis from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, has said the following:

‘Ed did not use the word Zionist to describe himself, but he made absolutely clear at the Board of Deputies event that he is a strong supporter of Israel, and that we should be “intolerant of those who question Israel’s right to exist”.’

Whether Mr Miliband is or is not a Zionist is an important issue that requires further clarity from Mr Miliband himself. There are many in the United Kingdom who disagree with the aims, ideals and policies of Zionism, which is racist against Palestinians. Zionists, on the other hand, are attempting to make the term synonymous with ‘Judaism’ in an attempt to make legitimate criticism of Zionism ‘anti-Semitic’.

As an individual seeking to become the next Prime Minister, it would behove Mr Miliband to set out his position clearly in a statement so as to dispel all ambiguity. We would also welcome Mr Miliband’s views on whether he thinks those critical of Israel are guilty of anti-semitism.
