Israeli jets on Sunday overflew southern Lebanon in violation of the country’s airspace, a security official told AFP.

“More than four Israeli jets began overflying most of the southern part of the country at 0630 GMT,” the official said.

The flights came amid continuing tension in Lebanon after deadly clashes between supporters of the Western-backed government and the Hizbollah-led opposition.

Israeli jets regularly overfly Lebanon in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which brought an end to the 34-day war between Israel and the Shiite Muslim Hizbollah group in August 2006.

The United Nations has called on Israel to stop violating Lebanese airspace. It says the overflights undermine the credibility of UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon and compromise efforts to stabilise the region.
