Friends of Al-Aqsa Calls on Foreign Secretary to Uphold British Promise to Guard Palestinian Prisoners

Israeli troops have stormed a prison in Jericho where Ahmed Saadat, leader of the PFLP, has been held since 2001, demanding that he surrender to them. The Occupation forces used a bulldozer to demolish a prison wall and have thus far killed one Palestinian guard and injured a further 18. They have also threatened to kill any prisoner who does not surrender.

Background

Saadat was detained in connection with the killing of Israels right-wing Tourism Minister Rehavam Zeevi by PFLP fighters in 2001, an attack that the group said was in retaliation for the assassination of Saadat’s predecessor by Israel. He has not been charged. Saadat is normally guarded by Palestinian jailers as well as UK and U.S. prison guards. But last week, foreign jailers withdrew, claiming that the move was due to security reasons.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has strongly condemned the Israeli raid, and said that American and British warders were responsible for the detainees safety. He also said that the withdrawal of the British and U.S. guards was a grave violation of agreements with the Palestinians.

ACTION

FoA calls on everyone to urgently contact Jack straw and demand that British guards return to the prison and fulfill their responsibility in protecting the prisoners. If Israeli troops are allowed to continue the siege, they have made it clear they will kill any prisoner who does not surrender.
