Mayor Ken Livingstone hosted a reception for peace last week in City Hall with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) and the Stop the War Coalition (STW).

A key speaker was US activist Cindy Sheehan who held an extended vigil outside George W Bush’s Texas ranch following the death of her son in Iraq.

Ken Livingstone, the Mayor of London, said: “It is a great honour to welcome Cindy Sheehan to London. More than two thousand American soldiers, and many, many times more Iraqi civilians, have been killed in this war.”

A GLA Economics Unit study looked into the impact of the war in Iraq on London’s economy suggesting that a war would cost London around £1bn in lost tourism and would indirectly effect oil price increases or effects on confidence in financial markets.

The Mayor said: “The majority of Londoners agree that the occupation should be ended and that the war has done significant harm to London’s economy.”
